What would you say if someone advised you to take that career plan you’ve been carefully cultivating all these years and burn it?  Although having each step of your career path carefully calculated would appear to be the sensible option, there is an alternative point of view .  In today’s WOBI video, Jack Welch claims that those who are open to change and willing if necessary to start afresh will in the long term be more successful.

Motivating people to work towards a specific goal or objective has always been identified as one of the key roles of a leader.  To achieve this it is becoming increasingly important to infuse work with a sense of meaning, as individual’s motivation is increasingly based on factors beyond economic remuneration.

In their book The Why of Work, Wend and Dave Ulrich place on the leader the key role of helping people to find that sense of meaning.  However in order to help those around them, it is necessary to discover and understand their own personal motivation.  In order to do this they propose a series of seven simple exercises that you can put into practice in order to understand your own motivations and subsequently discover what motivates those around you.

Anyone involved in business knows that staying up to date with the latest trends and practices in innovation can be critical in gaining that all important edge over the competition. For the last six years, the World Innovation Forum in New York has established itself as the premier business innovation event in the US offering a range of new perspectives and ideas with which to face up to coming business challenges.  This year, the World Innovation Forum will also take place for the first time in Mexico, in the city of Leon located in the state of Guanajuato.  This is no accident.  In recent years Leon has distinguished itself as a focal point for innovation within Mexico, establishing itself as a city determined to encourage business growth through the promotion of knowledge and new ideas.

This year's events in New York and Leon will focus on a number of key areas where innovation is pushing boundaries further and faster. These include mobile technology and digital marketing as platforms which both motivate and empower customers; virtual reality as a tool to positively impact the world; the advance of science in business; and new insights into innovative thinking and how to promote the creative impulse.

Whilst the New York edition of the World Innovation Forum takes place June 20-21, the Leon edition is just around the corner on May 23-24, and in anticipation of the event we want to share with you some great videos featuring speakers at the event in Leon.  Read on to learn more...

Amongst the different actions or initiatives designed to capture people's attention in recent times, there's one that has become a real favorite with marketing departments everywhere:  the viral video.

The phenomenon is well known.  It's difficult to find anyone today who hasn't at some to been moved to tears or fits of laughter by a video on youtube that everyone suddenly seems to be talking about and sharing with their networks of friends and colleagues.  Who can forget the inspirational appearance of Scottish housewife Susan Boyle on the TV show Britain's Got Talent back in 2009?  Or maybe you're one of those who watched a particularly original dance choreography acted out on tread mills in a gym that catapulted to fame the song Here It Goes Again by OK Go.  And there are few people who by now haven't seen or at least heard of the Old Spice Man.

Finding the formula to making your videos go viral has become a holy grail for companies everywhere.  So what is it that makes a particular video so attractive that it stirs up a storm on social networks and across the web?  Read on to find out...

We all recognize it when we feel it. Some call it “enchantment”, others affinity, some even compare it to the same power we feel for a religious belief. The over-night waits outside of Apple stores every time a new product launches, Google’s ability to create entirely new lexicons and vocabulary that spans multiple generations, and Nike’s foundation of the skinny, long-distance running clubs that inhabit just about every city: the companies that have achieved a cult-like following are clearly doing something different, but what?

Jonas Ridderstråle, international bestselling author and innovative management thinker, says it doesn’t have to do with strategy or a 5-year plan; it is about creating something people believe in that has at its very core a dream.

In a recent WOBI webinar, we hosted a discussion with Dr. Henry Chesbrough of the Program for Open Innovation at Berkeley Haas, as well as speaker at this year’s World Innovation Forum New York 2012, along with Bill Schulz of Walden University.
